El Pirulí/La Piruleta – My Spanish Word Of The Day 11/4/2015

el pirulí

¡Hola!

My Spanish word of the day is:

el pirulí or la piruleta

both mean lollipop

El pirulí is conical shaped, while la piruleta is a round lollipop.  Concerning el pirulí, the plural form is los pirulís.  Usually, with words that end in í or ú, you can choose to form the plural with either s or es.  For example, the plural of maniquí (mannequin) can be either maniquís or maniquíes and the plural of tabú can be either tabús or tabúes. But, there are exceptions to this rule and los pirulís is one of them.  Other exceptions are el champú/los champús and el menú/los menús.

Of course, the plural of la piruleta is las piruletas.

la piruleta

Interestingly, El Pirulí is also the name of a television tower in Madrid.

Other words for lollipop are: chupete (Bolivia and Guatemala), paraqüitas (Chile), pico dulce (Chile), and chupirul (Mexico)

¡Hasta aquí por hoy!
