In Spanish, el plano is a city map as well as a representation of smaller area such as a neighborhood or a college campus. El plano is also an architect’s blueprint for a house.
El mapa is a representation of a larger space, such as a county, state, province, country, or the world.
It is always good to remember that that although mapa ends in the letter -a, it is a masculine noun that requires a masculine pronoun.
